Winter Friend

In the shadow of the snow white day
Before the sun takes one last look
I call upon a winter friend
Within the pages of my favorite book
Together we do settle well in
Recalling how we did meet
Just about one year ago, When
the years first snow was at our feet
Talking for an hour or further
I hear my mother take to tapping
Once, twice upon my bedroom door
To check if we had fallen napping
With milk and toast she enters in
“I bring lunch now for my little man,
and yes, a plate for his friend”
Then leaves us quietly once again
And so we dine knowing full well
That the sun soon must take to rest
I cordially ask my friend to spend the evening
And be tonight my winter quest

comments welcome –
I was an introspective kid who found many fine friends in books. My mom used to take me to the library every week, and I’d check out all they’d let me have.
As an adult, I made much of my living drawing on the lessons I learned from all those books in childhood.
Dr. B
oh… such a great way to spent the winter (or summer) laying in bed all night and days going into far closeby lands with all those great little hero friends.
this poem reminded me of great and importent feeling.
Thank you Dr. B and Utopian for your comments – yes it is amazing where a book can take you. I too remember being able to travel the world just by getting lost within the pages of a book.
I would hope that children today find the same pleasures that we did with a favorite book.
i am sure those kids who read today enjoy it as much i could and did back then. i don’t know how many do read but what i wonder about is weather there are good new books for kids or is it the same classics i used to read (i think many of the best books i was reading were quite old and i also feel many of them are appealing ro me today the same or even more, where i can now see in them much more layrs)
I believe you are right “U” — some of my most cherished memories of books as a child are the same books and characters I cherish today —
many of them were nursery rhymes – maybe that is why I like writing them today —
“There’s nothing like a winter friend,” says E.
We both enjoyed this piece, barbara.
“Winter friends will never let you down or leave you,” E adds. “That’s most important of all.”
Yes Geoff,
And they are there to help you reminisce through the whole winter —
I hope you and “E” – enjoy all your Winter Friends
Happy New Year —
